Rosa Portogallo marble is quarried in Portugal's Estremoz district, around Lagoa, Pardais and Vila Viçosa, and it is the stone the Portuguese industry itself treats as its signature pink: a warm body carrying rose and salmon tones over white, with orange to reddish veining that runs as a soft cloudy pattern rather than a hard directional line. A Rosa Portogallo marble slab order is judged on which grade of the name you were sold, and on whether the background holds across a joint. Both failures pass a single-slab inspection, so both are checked as a run. Five checks cover them.

Grade and block selection

The trade name spans a dense grade at 0.11% water absorption and a salmonato grade near 0.70%, and that one figure decides whether the stone belongs on a wet floor. We state the grade in writing against the sample you approve, and photograph and log the block before sawing.

Vein continuity and book-matching

Portuguese pink carries soft cloudy veining rather than a hard directional line, which changes the risk: two slabs off adjacent blocks can share a background and lose it at the joint. We rack in cut order, number each slab edge, and dry-lay the pair before packing wherever a mirrored field is specified.

Infrared bridge cutting tolerance

Bridge saws hold +/-1mm on tile and cut-to-size dimensions, and +/-0.5mm where a slab joint closes against another material. Cut-to-size panels are dry-checked against the cutting list before packing, not after arrival.

Gloss, resin and back-mesh

Flexural strength at 21.4 MPa is low next to granite, so 16mm and 18mm slabs receive a fibreglass back mesh and surface resin over natural fissures before polishing. Faces are read under high-intensity halogen against a 90+ gloss target.

20mm vanity tops laid on a substrate, 30mm where the top edge is exposed, with undermount or drop-in sink cutouts and faucet holes drilled at 4 inch centre-set or 8 inch widespread to your blueprint rather than to a standard. Backsplash and side splashes run 4 inch, 6 inch, or full height to the mirror line. Grade matters most in this room: specify the dense grade at 0.11% water absorption for a bathroom floor or shower wall, because the salmonato grade near 0.70% belongs in dry rooms only. Every top ships sealed and is resealed yearly in commercial use. We would not quote this stone for a steam room, where continuous moisture and heat work against it; for that we quote granite or a porcelain panel.

Fireplaces - surround, hearth and chamber front

The classic use of this stone is a book-matched fireplace surround: two consecutive slabs opened like a book so the rose and salmon banding mirrors either side of the opening. 20mm for the surround panel set on a substrate, 30mm or laminated 20+20mm for a raised hearth where the edge is exposed and gets kicked. The surround is set on a fire-rated board rather than fixed direct to framing, and we keep the polished face off the chamber mouth, because a polished edge picks up soot and holds it. Honed is the usual specification for the field, polished only where a reflective surround is wanted, with the opening reveal eased or mitred to a clean line.

By the water absorption figure, not the colour. The dense grade tests at 0.11% and holds up on wet floors; the salmonato grade runs close to 0.70%, so it belongs in dry interior work. Ask for the block test before you specify.

02. How do you control shade and veining across a large Rosa Portogallo floor?

03. Does Rosa Portogallo pink marble etch in a kitchen or bathroom?
