Product Introduction

A hand-carved white marble fountain is built from a carved bowl, a pedestal and one or more tiers with a finial, chiselled out of natural stone rather than cast, moulded or resin-filled. The carving happens in our own workshop, by stone carvers who have been on European classical work for over fifteen years, on blocks chosen before the first cut rather than after the profile is roughed in.
Three things decide whether a marble fountain still runs in twenty years, and only one of them is the stone. The base has to be a true, level foundation. The joints between sections have to be solid and dowelled. The pump has to be sized and placed for the height the water is being asked to climb. A fountain that fails on site almost always fails on one of those three, not on the marble.
Products Description
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Material and Carving Method | Hand carved from natural white marble in our own workshop; the block is roughed by machine and the profiles, foliage and figures are finished by chisel and hand tool. Not a cast, moulded or resin body |
| Stone Type and Origin | Chinese white marble as standard, including crystal white and calcite whites; imported Italian Carrara cut on request. Which of the two an order is cut from is stated on the packing list |
| Stone Colour and Figure | Chinese white runs from crystal white to a quiet even ground, sometimes with a faint flash inside the crystal; Carrara is off-white to blue grey with soft linear veining |
| Configuration and Sections | Basin, pedestal, one, two or three tiers and a finial; wall fountains, freestanding pedestal fountains, tiered centrepieces and wall-mounted bowls |
| Overall Heights | 800, 1200, 1500 and 2000 mm as standard, cut up to 5000 mm to drawing |
| Basin and Bowl Diameters | 600, 1000, 1500 and 2000 mm as standard, or to CAD dimension |
| Section Wall Thickness | Gauged at the thinnest point of each carved bowl rather than at the rim, and written onto the section drawing; the thin wall is the one that has to hold the water |
| Joint and Dowel Detail | Two stainless dowels per stacked joint, or a pin with a registration dowel on smaller sections. A single pin is not used, because one pin lets the tier turn on its axis and puts the whole load through one hole |
| Channel, Drain and Overflow | Cored channels at 25, 32 or 50 mm according to pump and head, aligned to the orifice so no external pipe is visible; drain taken from the low point of the basin with an overflow below the rim |
| Surface Finishes | Polished, honed, bush hammered, chiselled, rock pitched; bowl interiors are usually honed rather than polished, so the water does not show every rub mark |
| Tolerances | Cored channel alignment within ±1 mm; bowl rim level within ±0.5 mm; joint faces flat to a feeler gauge before bedding |
| Bulk Density | Around 2.70 g/cm³ for a calcite marble, against 2.65 to 2.80 g/cm³ for the granites we supply. The base is designed on the lot figure, not on this line |
| Water Absorption | Read from the lot certificate to ASTM C97 / EN 13755. Marble takes up more water than granite does, which is why a fountain is drained and covered rather than left filled through a winter |
| Compressive Strength | 70 to 140 MPa typical across commercial marbles, with most varieties falling near 100 to 120 MPa (ASTM C170 / EN 1926) |
| Flexural Strength | 7 to 15 MPa typical for marble (ASTM C99 / EN 12372), and this is the figure that governs how far a bowl can overhang and how thin a pedestal can be carved |
| Acid and Cleaning | Calcium carbonate stone, so acid cleaners, vinegar and acidic pool chemistry attack the polished surface. A neutral pH cleaner is specified, and the finish will not take an acid wash on site |
| Iron, Sealing and Yellowing | Blocks are screened for iron-bearing veins before carving, and surfaces are sealed only once the stone is fully dry. Refer to our note on why white stone turns yellow for the four causes we check against |
| Freeze and Winterising | Drain the basin through the low-point drain and lift the pump before the first frost. A fountain left full through a freeze is the usual cause of a split bowl, and no marble grade avoids it |
| Packing and Load Plan | Sections crated separately in fumigated ISPM 15 timber, foam faced, carved profiles braced back against the crate wall, each labelled with its joint number. Basins travel separately from pedestals |
| Payment, Port, MOQ and Lead Time | 30% T/T deposit with the balance against copy of B/L, or an irrevocable L/C at sight; FOB Xiamen, China; one set minimum and carving to drawing accepted; 25 to 35 days for a first set, subject to the carving on the drawing |
Products Inspection
Quality Control & Inspection Standards
Wall Left At Thinnest
Each bowl is gauged at its thinnest remaining point rather than at the rim, since the rim is the part the carving leaves alone and the wall below it is where material has gone.
Pair Pins Not One
Every stacked joint is located on two stainless dowels, or on a pin with a registration dowel where the section is small, and the holes are drilled to depth before the faces are finally dressed.

Joint Faces Bedded True
The joint between two sections is dry-bedded in the yard and read with a feeler gauge before anything is crated, because a carved pedestal that does not sit true leaks at the joint rather than through the stone.
Drain Left At Low Point
The basin drain is checked to sit at the point the bowl actually drains from, and an overflow is checked to sit below the rim, so the basin can be emptied completely before a frost.
Products Application
Typical Project & Application Scenarios

Hotel Forecourts and Resort Arrivals
A forecourt fountain is the first thing a guest walks past and the last thing the property manager has to maintain, which makes it a specification question as much as a design one. A carved white marble fountain running at 1200 to 2000 mm gives an arrival sequence a sound that masks traffic and a vertical white element that reads at distance, and the carved tiers photograph well under uplighting at night.
Because it stands in the open and runs continuously, the pump is sized to the head it actually has to lift and the drain is accessible without lifting the top tier off, so the basin can be emptied for a service or a cold snap by one person. Where the property closes for a season, the order usually carries two spare dowels and a set of joint gaskets so the sections can be taken apart and stored.
Cold-Climate Plazas and Atria
Below freezing, a marble fountain is a seasonal object rather than a permanent one, and the drawings should say so from the start. The basin is drained through the low-point drain, the pump is lifted and stored wet, and the bowl is covered - a bowl left full through a hard frost will split along the thin wall, and no grade of marble avoids that.
Where the fountain has to run all year, it belongs indoors: an atrium or a covered courtyard keeps the stone dry overhead and above the frost line, and the design there turns on the pool chemistry instead, since acidic water and chlorinated splash attack a calcium carbonate stone. Specifying marble for an indoor water feature also means specifying a neutral pH cleaner and a sealing schedule from day one, rather than once a mark has shown up.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How is the wall thickness decided when we want a slimmer bowl?
We read the thinnest point the carving would leave, put that figure on the section drawing and send it back before cutting, so you approve the section rather than the silhouette. A bowl is only taken finer when the tier above it is light enough to allow it.
Will a white marble fountain survive winter outdoors?
It will survive being frozen dry, not being frozen full. Drain the basin through the low-point drain, lift and store the pump, and cover the bowl before the first frost. Water left standing in a bowl expands as it freezes and splits the thinnest wall, whatever grade of marble it is cut from.
Will the marble stay the same colour as the sample across basins and pedestals?
Basins, pedestals and tiers for a single fountain come off one block wherever the dimensions allow, and the figure is matched while the block is still whole, before carving starts. Across large projects we group the blocks by vein density rather than by name, so a plaza does not arrive with two different whites.
How is a fountain packed, and what does a crate weigh?
Basins travel separately from pedestals and tiers, each section crated on its own in fumigated timber, foam faced, with the carved profiles braced back against the crate wall. Each crate is weighed and marked before loading, and the set ships as a numbered kit so the site can assemble in order.
