Product Introduction

These steps are cut in G603, the fine-grained light grey granite that most of the world's exterior stair work ends up in. It is one of the three quarry interests the company holds, alongside New G654 and Nero Santiago, so the block supply behind a stair order is not bought in from a broker each time.
The tread carries a grit strip: an abrasive band bedded into the top face, 50 mm wide as our shop standard, with a 15 mm chamfer run along the front edge. The strip is what turns a flamed tread into a surface that grips on a wet morning, and it is the part of the step that most of the questions from project buyers are about.
A stair is a set, so a stair is cut as a set. Treads, risers, landings and the edge trim for one flight come off one block selection, are numbered to their position, and are dry-laid in the yard before crating, and that is what keeps the tone and the strip line agreeing from the first step to the last.
Products Description
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Material and Grade | G603 fine-grained light grey granite, the sesame-speck grade also sold as Padang Light in some markets |
| Colour and Surface Reading | Even light grey with a fine black and white speck; a pale ground shows soiling and salt early, which is deliberate on public and clinical work and a known trade-off on private paving |
| Grit Strip Specification | One abrasive strip 50 mm wide bedded into the top face as standard; other widths cut on request |
| Strip Placement and Flushness | Strip bedded level with the surrounding face or a fraction below it, set back from the front edge by the dimension on your drawing, and read with a straight edge across the tread |
| Grit Grade and Contrast | Abrasive grade chosen for the traffic on the step; the strip reads darker than the granite on every G603 tread, so its line is part of the drawing rather than a hidden detail |
| Tread and Riser Sizes | Shop standard tread 1180 x 330 x 30 mm with a 1180 x 122 x 20 mm riser; other widths, goings and thicknesses cut to your drawing |
| Landing and Trim Options | Landings cut to the flight width in the same batch as the treads; edge trim and step-to-kerb transitions drawn from the same blocks where an approach runs straight into paving |
| Thickness and Tolerance | ±1 mm on calibrated steps and ±0.5 mm on thin risers; squareness and diagonal within ∓0.5 mm across a laid set |
| Front Edge and Chamfer | Chamfer run at 15 mm along the full front edge, cut before the face is finished so the grain opens evenly and no polished band is left showing in the profile |
| Surface Finishes | Flamed, flamed and brushed, bush hammered, sandblasted, honed, polished, leather, pineapple; a flamed and brushed face all round is what most exterior work is ordered in |
| Slip Resistance | R11 to R12 on the flamed face by DIN 51130; the polished face is not offered for an exterior tread |
| Bulk Density | 2.65 g/cm³ (ASTM C97 / EN 1936) |
| Water Absorption | 0.18% (ASTM C97 / EN 13755) |
| Compressive Strength | 178 MPa (ASTM C170 / EN 1926) |
| Flexural Strength | 14.2 MPa (ASTM C99 / EN 12372) |
| Hardness and Abrasion Loss | Mohs 6.5 to 7.0; abrasion resistance of 18.5 mm wear loop to EN 14157, read on the granite rather than on the strip |
| Frost, Salt and Cleaning | Absorption at this figure leaves little free water to expand in a freeze; de-icing salt dries off as a faint bloom on a pale ground, and the surface takes a neutral pH cleaner without dulling |
| Certificate and Test Reports | SGS report, CE marking for the European market and Form A for the certificate of origin, issued with the consignment |
| Packing and Load Plan | Steps and risers packed face to face in strong seaworthy timber crates or banded bundles, ISPM 15 heat treated, with the strip ends protected so a crate does not rub against them |
| Payment, Port, MOQ and Lead Time | 30% T/T deposit with the balance against copy of B/L, or an irrevocable L/C at sight; FOB Wuhan or Xiamen, China; one crate minimum and mixed sizes accepted; 10 to 15 days after order confirmation |
Quality Standards
Quality Control & Inspection Standards
YoYo Stone enforces a rigorous six-stage quality verification protocol for every commercial production run of Granite Stone Steps Outdoor:
Stripe Straightness In Grey
The strip is read for constant width and for a line parallel to the front edge over its whole length, in daylight rather than under a single lamp, because light grey turns any waver into a visible kink.
01
Grit Height Set Flush
The abrasive is set level with the granite or a fraction below it and read with a straight edge laid across the tread, since the grit outlasts the feldspar around it and a strip delivered proud has only one direction to move.
02
Band Ends Dressed Down
Both ends of the strip are dressed so the abrasive does not finish at a square shoulder, because that shoulder is where a heel or the edge of a boot sole catches on the way up.
03
Bond Line Kept Dry
The seam between abrasive and granite is read for a continuous bed and for dryness before packing, since an open seam holds water against two materials that move differently when that water freezes.
04
Resin Bed Adhesion Testing
The resin compound binding the abrasive grit into the recessed channel undergoes mechanical pull-off testing on sample off-cuts to verify chemical adhesion.
05
Products Application
Typical Project & Application Scenarios

Hospital, School and Care Approaches
Where a building carries a duty to keep people upright, a tread tends to be specified with a grit strip rather than with texture alone, and the grade gets picked on how it looks dirty as much as on how it grips. A pale ground shows exactly where a surface has been walked and where it has not, which is why cleaning schedules in clinical and education buildings often settle on a light grey for the entrance flight.
The strip runs the full length of each tread and sits flush, so a trolley wheel crosses without a bump and a walking aid does not catch on it. Handrail lines, half-landings and the top riser are cut in the same batch as the flight, so the whole approach reads as one piece of stone from the door back to the path.
Coastal Promenades and Frontages
Salt air, wind-blown sand and rain arriving sideways are the three things a frontage stair has to survive, and all three work on the surface rather than on the structure. On light grey the salt dries out as a faint bloom that the next weather takes off again, while the same deposit on a dark ground reads as a stain and invites harsher cleaning than the stone needs.
Wind-blown sand is abrasive in its own right, which is a reason for specifying a flamed face on coastal work even where the tread sits under a canopy, and the strip carries the grip where wind keeps the tread wet. The 15 mm chamfer takes the outer profile away from a sharp shoulder that would otherwise chip first.

FAQ
Everything You Want To Know

01. How is the grit strip bedded into the tread, and what makes one lift?
The strip is bedded into a recess cut in the face and pressed while the bed is open, then read again once the tread is clean and dry. A strip lifts when the recess is damp at bedding, when the ends are left square, or when it arrives already proud of the stone.
02. Will the strip end up standing proud of the stone as the steps wear?
03. How do you hold the light grey tone even across a whole flight?
04. How is a step order crated, and what does each crate weigh?
05. Can the strip be left out, and what do you offer in place of it?
Yes. A flamed face on its own, or a bush-hammered one, reaches the same slip rating and is what most covered steps are ordered in; a groove pattern or a deeper chamfer can be cut in its place. The strip is specified where a tread stays wet in the open.
