Product Introduction

An outdoor granite stair is bought as a set, not as a length of stone. Treads, risers, landings and the chamfer along the front edge have to arrive as one flight cut from one batch, because the eye reads the run from the bottom of the steps and the foot reads it one riser at a time.
We cut two grades for exterior work, and they are the two the trade asks for by name: G603 in light grey, and Old G654 in dark grey, traded internationally as Padang Dark. G603 comes off a quarry interest held by the company; Old G654 is cut from graded block reserves rather than bought on the spot market, since the original Changtai workings have not been worked at scale for years. G633, G623 and black granites are available where a drawing calls for them.
Products Description
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Product Name | G655 Granite; Brand: YoYo Stone |
| Also Listed As | g655 granite, g655 granite slab, Sunny White Granite, Tong'an White, Hazel White, Rice Grain White Granite, white granite with light grey spots |
| Stone Type | A medium-grained diorite quarried near Tong'an in Fujian, China, of Precambrian age, sold throughout the trade as a granite. Not a marble and not an engineered surface |
| Origin | China. Block bought first-hand from the quarry operator near Tong'an, Xiamen, rather than a distant broker. Our own three quarries are G603 Wuhan, new G654 and Nero Santiago, in Shandong |
| Primary Colour | White ground with evenly distributed light grey spots |
| Surface Finishes | Polished and honed as standard; flamed, flamed plus brushed, sawn, bush hammered, sandblasted and antique on request |
| Available Thickness | 15mm, 18mm, 20mm, 30mm and 40mm; other thicknesses cut to request |
| Gangsaw Slab | 1700-2700 x 600-1500 x 18-30mm, or cut to your drawing |
| Countertop and Vanity Top | Countertop 96x26 in, 108x26 in, 72x36 in and 96x16 in; vanity top 25x22 in, 31x22 in, 37x22 in, 49x22 in and 61x22 in; customized design available |
| Table Top and Other Work | Table tops square or round to your drawing; wall and floor tiles, window sills, wall cladding, balusters, staircases and pillar or column cladding |
| Thickness Tolerance | +/-1mm as the house standard, or +/-0.5mm on calibrated tile |
| Water Absorption | 0.02 percent on the published sheet. Sealing is applied regardless, because the figure describes the material rather than the joint at the fixing |
| Density | About 2.76 g/cm3, so about 55kg per square metre at 20mm and 83kg at 30mm |
| Strength | Specified as granite dimension stone to ASTM C615: not less than 131 MPa compressive and 10.34 MPa modulus of rupture. A test report is supplied per lot |
| Staining and Fixings | A light granite shows marks a dark one hides, and the mark that matters is rust from water contact with iron. Fixings are stainless; the underside is sealed before bedding |
| Care | A penetrating sealer on the face, re-applied on cycle and checked with a water bead test. Never use vinegar, lemon or descaler on a rust mark: acid mobilises the iron |
| Project Decoration | Commercial buildings, residential apartments and gardens; exterior and interior wall and floor applications, monuments, countertops, mosaic, fountains, pool and wall capping, stairs and window sills |
| Exterior Wall Advice | For exterior wall work we suggest 25mm to 30mm in a polished, honed or flamed finish, because a thin facade tile is a handling problem rather than a strength problem |
| Minimum Order, Samples and Port | One crate, with small trial orders accepted and mixed sizes consolidated. Free sample with freight paid by the buyer, refunded against the order; Port Xiamen, China |
| Inspection and Service | Product pictures and progress updates issued against the order, with QC inspection by the buyer, the buyer's representative or a third-party agent all accepted |
Quality Standards
Quality Control & Inspection Standards
YoYo Stone enforces a rigorous six-stage quality verification protocol for every commercial production run of Granite for Outdoor Stairs:
Band Set Off Nosing
The setback of the anti-slip band is measured from the nosing rather than from the tread centre, and read on the first and last step of the flight where any difference between the two shows up.
01
Nosing Chamfer Kept True
The chamfer is run at one size along the full front edge, and its ends are checked, because a chamfer that runs out leaves a sharp arris that chips first and spalls in the frost that follows.
02
Drip Groove Cut Full
The groove under the nosing is checked for continuity and for a constant setback, since a groove that stops short lets water track back onto the riser face.
03
Rise Read Down Flight
Riser heights are measured against the flight rather than against each piece's own drawing, because a set that is individually in tolerance can still walk out of step by the top landing.
04
Tread Read For Cupping
A flamed tread is read with a straight edge across its width and along its length once the face has cooled, because the heat of flaming can leave a thin piece slightly hollow and a hollow holds water.
05
Products Application
Typical Project & Application Scenarios

Public Realm and Terraced Landscapes
Municipal plazas, park steps and the stepped seating of an amphitheatre take far more traffic than a house entrance and are specified by the engineer rather than by the buyer. R11 to R12 on the flamed face and a compressive strength above 170 MPa are the two figures these drawings tend to ask for, and the abrasion result at 18.5 mm wear loop is what decides the grade where maintenance vehicles cross the steps.
Spans are wider, so treads are cut in longer lengths and the joints are set to land over the supporting wall rather than in mid-air, and the rise across a flight is held to a single dimension because a public stair with a variable riser is a liability as well as a trip hazard. Terraced gardens use the same pieces at lower risers to follow a slope, and there the tolerance on the chamfer matters more than the tolerance on the length.
Entrance Flights and Porch Steps
A front approach of three to eight risers is where most of this material goes, because it takes weather from both directions and gets gritted every winter. G603 in the flamed finish holds its tone under road salt, the salt showing as a bloom that washes off rather than as a bite into the surface, and the anti-slip band is what a boot finds first on a wet morning.
Widths run 1000 to 1200 mm with the riser set back under the nosing, which is why the riser is normally cut as its own piece rather than built up behind the tread. Where the drawing wants a single-piece step instead, the same grade is cut 150 mm thick off the block and finished on all faces so the step reads as solid stone from the path.

FAQ
Everything You Want To Know

01. How do you keep tone consistent across a flight delivered in phases?
Blocks are grouped by tone before cutting and each flight is dry-assembled and numbered as a set before packing. Stair sets for a later phase are cut out of the block selection held against the job and matched by those painted numbers, so the second flight carries on from the first.
02. Which finish should an outdoor tread be ordered in?
03. What does a flight weigh, and how is it braced for the crossing?
04. Will a granite step spall after a few winters, and what stops it?
Spalling starts at the front edge, and it starts with water. Absorption at 0.18% leaves almost no free water inside the stone to expand when it freezes, so a properly chamfered nosing with a working drip groove is what keeps the arris intact. Salt bloom washes off.
05. Can you cut a curved or tapered flight from our drawing?
Yes. Send the shop drawing and we set out a 1:1 template before cutting, then dry-assemble the flight in the yard and number each piece to its position. Curved, tapered and winder treads are cut to the same tolerance as straight ones.
