Product Introduction

Called a quartzite or a marble depending on who is quoting, Taj Mahal is a veining look rather than one stone, and the sinks here are cut from natural quartzite: metamorphic, quartz-dominant, absorbing 0.05 to 0.30 percent, at Mohs 7. Each piece is taken from one block bought for it, squared on the works wire saws and hollowed on the waterjets, so there is no joint in the bowl and no plinth line to leak.
What decides whether the piece works is everything below the rim, because a freestanding drum carries twelve litres at the top of a column and has no cabinet to hide a trap in. Blocks are bought one at a time, the bowl position is set against the drawing before the first cut, and every finished piece is stood, filled, drained and weighed before it is crated.

Products Inspection
Quality Control & Inspection Standards
Tipping Read With The Bowl Full
The assembled sink is pushed and leaned against with the bowl at capacity, since a stone column that stands still empty becomes a different object with twelve litres of water near its top.
Bearing Ring Read On A Plate
The bearing ring is gauged on a surface plate before crating, because the whole weight of a rigid column lands on that ring and a base touching at one point only cracks at that point.

Waste Route Proved Before Polishing
The waste and trap route is threaded with a dummy pipe before the face is polished, since a route that cannot be threaded means a new hole drilled through a finished surface.
Capacity Measured With Water
Each bowl is filled and measured to the capacity on the drawing, because a carved bowl is not a mould and the spa or hotel specification quotes that volume to the client.
Products Applications
Project Applications & Usage Areas

Freestanding Columns With Nothing Tied Back To The Wall
A drum sink that needs no wall fixing is the point of the piece, and it is also the reason the base and the height have to be checked against each other rather than chosen on looks.

Bearing On A Stone Floor With A Fall
Wet room floors are laid to a fall towards a drain, and a rigid column set on a fall touches the tile on one edge of its ring and hangs on the other.

The Waste Inside A Closed Column
A freestanding sink has no cabinet, so the trap lives inside the stone and the waste has to leave through the shell. That fixes the exit height on the drawing before anything is cut, and it also decides how the trap is reached for cleaning, because a trap that can only be serviced by moving a two hundred kilo drum is not a serviceable detail.

Quartzite In A Wet Room
Quartzite is the reason this piece can sit in a wet room at all: it does not etch, so soap, shampoo and bathroom cleaner leave the polish alone, and it takes a working surface heat far above anything a tap delivers.
FAQ
FAQ
Q:1.Is Taj Mahal a quartzite or a marble?
A: It is a veining look that gets sold as both, and reputable yards quote it against two different products. The piece on this page is natural quartzite: quarried rather than pressed, at Mohs 7, absorbing 0.05 to 0.30 percent, and unaffected by acid.
Q:2.Does a freestanding stone sink have to be fixed to the wall?
No, and that is the point of the design. It also means the base diameter and the height have to be in proportion and the floor has to be level, because nothing else is holding the column up.
Q:3.Where does the waste go in a sink with no cabinet under it?
A:The bowl drains through the shell and the outlet is positioned on the drawing before the block is cut. The trap sits inside the column, so the drawing also sets how it is reached for cleaning without moving the piece.
Q:4.Will a quartzite sink stain or etch?
A: It will not etch, so bathroom acids leave the face alone, which is the main difference from a marble basin. Sealing is still specified where absorption is above 0.10 percent, and standing water on the rim is what leaves a mark on the tan and gold veining.
Q:5.Can the bowl be any size I want?
A:The bowl is cut to your drawing, and the limit is the block rather than the drawing: the deeper and wider the bowl, the thinner the wall left between it and the outside face. Send the capacity you need and the diameter, and the reply gives the wall that remains at its thinnest.
