Product Introduction

A Grey Hermes quartz slab is a manufactured recipe rather than a quarried block, and the number a buyer has to carry forward from a job is the press batch, not the colour name. The slab is pressed from roughly 90 to 93 percent crushed crystalline quartz bound in 7 to 10 percent polyester resin with pigment, so its colour and its veining are repeatable to a recipe, which is the whole commercial argument for choosing a grey marble quartz over the natural marble it imitates. Grey Hermes quartz is a mid grey ground carrying white veining, supplied in 3200x1600mm and 3000x1400mm jumbo slabs at 15mm, 18mm, 20mm and 30mm, calibrated to +/-1mm and polished on the face as standard or honed on request. Two production controls decide whether a finished kitchen matches the sample, and neither is visible in the slab: the batch, because two press runs of the same colour code can sit a shade apart, and the cut sequence, because a book-matched pair only lines its veins up if the two slabs were cut consecutively off one run. Fabrication follows different rules from natural stone, since a resin-bound surface at this quartz content takes a knife without marking but chips at an unbuffered aperture, and cutting it dry releases respirable crystalline silica, so apertures and edge work are cut wet or under extraction.
Products Description
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Product Name | Grey Hermes Quartz Slab; also quoted as grey marble quartz; brand YoYo Stone |
| Material and Composition | Roughly 90 to 93 percent crushed crystalline quartz bound in 7 to 10 percent polyester resin, with pigment and trace additives, pressed under vacuum and cured |
| Colour and Pattern | Mid grey ground with white veining; the veining is through-body rather than printed on the surface unless a printed run is supplied, and the run is stated on the order |
| Slab Sizes | 3200x1600mm and 3000x1400mm jumbo slabs; other sizes cut from jumbo against your cut list |
| Thickness | 15mm, 18mm, 20mm and 30mm |
| Thickness Tolerance | Calibrated to +/-1mm across the slab; +/-0.5mm held on a book-matched pair |
| Surface Finishes | Polished on the face as standard, honed on request, with the cut edge polished to match |
| Edge Profiles | Eased, beveled, bullnose, ogee, mitred and laminated, with a 20+20mm lamination where the top has to read 40mm |
| Sink Cut-out and Support | Undermount or drop-in, CNC cut from your template; internal corners radiused, and a bisected off-cut supplied for a sink support or filler strip |
| Faucet Holes and Backsplash | Faucet and soap holes drilled to drawing before polishing; 100mm or 150mm backsplash, or a full-height wall panel from the same press run |
| Density | 2.35 to 2.45 g/cm3 |
| Water Absorption | 0.05% by mass or less, which is why a quartz ground does not need sealing |
| Compressive and Flexural Strength | 190 to 220 MPa compressive and 45 to 55 MPa flexural, so the aperture rather than the span is the governing detail |
| Mohs Hardness | 6 to 7, so a kitchen knife will not mark the face and the cut edge is the part that chips |
| Surface Heat Limit | A working limit near 120 to 150 °C, set by the resin binder, so a trivet is required under a hot pan |
| Chemical and Stain Resistance | Kitchen acids and alkalis are resisted, unlike a calcite marble; a resin-bound surface still marks under a concentrated solvent or a dye left standing |
| Weight per Slab and Container Load | 246 kg for a 20mm slab and 368 kg at 30mm; roughly 100 slabs, about 510 m2, per 20ft in A-frames |
| Fabrication Note | Cut wet or under dust extraction; dry cutting a quartz slab releases respirable crystalline silica |
| Packing | Peel-off film over the polished face; slabs stood in A-frames fumigated to ISPM 15, with the press batch number marked on the crate |
| MOQ, Terms and Port | One bundle minimum, about 15 slabs; 30% deposit by T/T, balance against the B/L copy, or an L/C at sight; FOB, EXW or CIF Xiamen; samples cut from the batch |
Quality Standards
A Grey Hermes quartz slab is the one product on this site whose colour can be promised rather than described, and the four checks below are what turns that promise into a document. Two of them belong to the press and the saw, the batch that fixes the shade and the consecutive cut that makes a pair line up, and two belong to the fabricator, the aperture that is where a quartz top breaks and the seam that a mid grey exposes. The buyer never sees any of the four in the finished kitchen, which is exactly why each one is written down and travels with the crate.
01
Press batch and consecutive cut
The colour and the vein are a recipe, so a job is quoted and reserved against one press batch and the batch number is written on the order, the packing list and the crate.
02
The aperture, the radius and the wet cut
The sink cut-out is the point at which a quartz top fails, so apertures are CNC cut to the template with radiused internal corners, a bisected off-cut is kept as the sink support rather than a strip cut from stock, and the cut and the edge work are done wet or under extraction.
03
The grey ground, the seam and the adhesive
Grey is the most forgiving ground for dust and light scratching and the least forgiving for a joint, so seams are set out to fall on a vein or at a unit line and the fabricator is given the layout rather than left to place them.
04
Calibration, film and the A-frame record
Slabs are gauged at four points to +/-1mm and checked for bow on the plate before the film goes on, since a slab that is out of gauge cannot be mitred to a 40mm face without a visible step.
Products Application
Typical Project & Application Scenarios
Kitchen countertops and islands
A Grey Hermes quartz run cut from one press batch, with the island laminated to read 40mm, the sink aperture radiused and the seams set on the vein line.
Grey quartz sink and vanity units
Undermount and drop-in basins in bathroom and utility rooms, cut to template with a bisected off-cut supplied as the sink support and the edge polished to the face.

Bathroom wall and shower panels
Full-height panels in 20mm or 30mm with the veins carried up from one run, so the panel joints land on a vein rather than mid-ground.
Commercial and hospitality fit-outs
Bar tops, reception counters and back counters in a honed face, where a mid grey reads as deliberate under low light and does not show the fingerprints a black ground does.
FAQ
Everything You Want To Know

01. How do you keep the colour and the veining consistent across a Grey Hermes quartz job?
02. Can a grey quartz sink or vanity top be cut without the aperture chipping?
03. Does a Grey Hermes quartz slab need sealing, and how does it handle heat and acid?
04. How many quartz slabs fit in a container, and how are they packed?
05. Can Grey Hermes quartz be supplied as a book-matched pair for a feature wall?
Yes, on a consecutive cut from one press run, and that is the only way the veins will mirror. We dry-lay the pair face up and photograph it before packing, and we mark the two slabs left and right on the crate.
