Blue Onyx Stone Slab sits under a name that misleads on both chemistry and hardness, so settle what it is first: a banded calcium carbonate sold as onyx marble, and not true onyx, which is chalcedony at about Mohs 7. This material is calcite at Mohs 3 to 4, the same family as marble, and it occurs as translucent bands of blue calcite alternating with opaque brownish and cream vein lines. It is quarried in Iran, Pakistan and Turkey, with material also from Mexico, Brazil and Afghanistan; the blue is a trace mineral colour inside the carbonate rather than a dye; and the block travels to Xiamen, where it is sawn to 180up x 120up cm at a normal 16mm, or to 2400x1600mm at 18mm, 20mm and 30mm, and polished, honed or matt to your drawing.
