Product Introduction

blue onyx marble

Blue River onyx marble slabs are banded calcite imported as blocks from the established onyx regions of Iran, Pakistan and Turkey and then finished in China, and this lot runs a blue ground with gold, cream and grey banding through it in one direction. The listing name needs one correction before the drawing is read: the stone is a banded calcium carbonate at Mohs 3, not the chalcedony that mineralogy calls onyx, and it is softer and more acid-sensitive than a true marble. What makes a blue onyx marble slab worth its cost is transmission, and on this colour the transmission is uneven by nature. The blue field passes light while the gold bands carry iron and shut it off, so a light box laid out to the panel outline instead of the vein map produces a wall with bright windows and dead patches.

Quality Standards

Quality Control & Inspection Standards

A bookmatched onyx wall is accepted the way the client will finally see it: lit from behind, with the two halves standing at the joint, because almost everything that can go wrong on this material is invisible in a single slab under workshop light. A vein that runs against the set, a resin cloud, an opaque patch of gold sitting where the brightest light falls, each of those is a small mark on one slab and a fault on the finished wall. The order of the checks below follows that logic, and the blue onyx marble slab pair is treated as one piece of stone throughout.

01

Mirror axis chosen at the block, not on site

The axis of symmetry is picked on the block face before sawing, and the two slabs either side of it are set aside as a pair.

2

Light-table reading with the pair side by side

Both halves go on the light table together, because a gold band that reads as texture in one slab becomes a black stripe when its mirror image sits beside it.

03

Kerf, arris and joint fit at the mirror line

The pair is dry-set with the joint made up to the specified width, so the banding meets across the axis without a step in the pattern, and both arrises are brought to the same eased section.

04

Carrier decision, crating and set numbering

Frames are detailed against the slab footprint before the panels leave, and every pair is crated together with its set number stencilled on the outside. REACH documentation is issued with the shipping papers.

Products Application

Typical Project & Application Scenarios

Hotel lobbies, reception walls and lift halls

The standard use for a blue onyx marble slab wall, where the pair is lit from behind and the mirror axis is set on the centre line of the lift core so the pattern reads from the entrance.

Fireplace walls and chimney breasts

A pair wrapped around a chimney breast needs the axis on the corner rather than the middle, and the surround is detailed so the brightest light sits on the blue field and not across a gold band.

Bars, islands and back counters

3 cm material for a bar top and a 1.8 cm bookmatched front for backlit bar counters, where the stone is quoted on a supporting substrate rather than spanning on its own.

Bathrooms, vanities and powder rooms

Vanity tops and backlit powder room walls in the same lot, sealed at the works because the stone is acid-sensitive and a bathroom is where acid cleaners get used.

FAQ

Everything You Want To Know

blue onyx marble slab

01. How do you keep a bookmatch continuous across a two-storey hotel wall?

The pair is chosen at the block and the mirror axis is fixed there, then each half is cut to the wall height in one piece where the slab allows. Where it is not, the wall splits on a horizontal band line so the break reads as a joint.

02.  Why does the gold banding look dark once the wall is backlit?

Because the gold is iron-bearing and opaque while the blue field transmits. The bands behave as shutters, not as lit material. Light boxes are therefore laid out against the vein map, so a bright run sits under the blue and never under a heavy band.

03.  What does a 240up x 120up x 1.8 cm blue onyx marble slab weigh?

About 140 kg per slab, covering 2.88 m2, or roughly 49 kg per square metre at this thickness. Weight rather than volume sets the container load, at approximately 550 m2 on a 20 ft, and pairs are crated together, so an odd slab is not shipped alone.

04.  Does the gold banding etch differently from the blue field?

Both are carbonate and both etch, but the pale gold reads a mark faster than the blue does. A penetrating sealer goes on face, edges and underside before crating, and a pH-neutral cleaner afterwards. This is not a kitchen prep surface.

05.  What drives the price of a natural blue onyx marble slab order?

Band width and pair quality first, then thickness, then the light-table reject rate, because a slab that will not pair is stock we cannot sell as bookmatch. Volume breaks apply from 10 to 199 m2 and again from 200 m2 upwards.
