Steel Gray Granite Stone is a granite quarried in India and sold in the trade as Indian Steel, Steel Grey or Steel Gray. The face is a mid-grey ground carrying small black, brown and silver flecks in a low-variation pattern, and the grain is fine enough that the surface polishes tight instead of opening into coarse crystal. That grain is the reason the stone behaves on a countertop programme: low variation means there is no vein to match and no shade band to hold, so the layout work disappears. What it does not remove is the work at the edge. On a Steel Gray granite there is little on the face for a client to look at, so every judgement about the finished piece lands on the edge profile, the aperture and the seam position, and those have to be settled in a drawing rather than on site. Quality Control & Inspection Standards

A countertop is not accepted against the stone it came out of but against the template it has to fit, which is why the checks below are written around the aperture, the seam and the edge rather than around the slab face. A Steel Gray granite has almost nothing on the face to argue about, so the risk moves entirely into the fabrication drawing: one cutout 3 mm out of place, one seam set on the wrong centre line, and the piece is scrap however good the block was. Everything that follows is an attempt to catch those decisions before the saw moves.

Template and cutout verification

Every steel gray granite aperture is cut against your template, not against a scale drawing, and the sink and tap positions are marked on the piece and checked before polishing.

Seam position and edge profile

Seams are set off the sink centre line and clear of the hob, so the joint is not the first thing the eye lands on. Each edge profile is run against a jig, and laminated edges are bonded and left to cure before routing so the build line does not open later.

Thickness, flatness and polish reading

Calibrated tops are gauged to +/-0.5 mm and checked for bow on a granite surface plate, since a top that rocks shows at the sink. Polished faces are read for gloss at 90 and above, and honed faces are checked for patchiness under grazing light.

Crating, edge protection and load plan

Tops travel on A-frames with every arris edge-protected and pieces separated so faces cannot rub, in crates fumigated and marked to ISPM 15. Bundle weights are compared with the container payload before the load plan is issued.

01. How much shade variation should we expect across a Steel Gray granite order?

Very little, and that is the point of the stone. It is a low-variation granite with a fine grain, so crate-to-crate swing reads as texture rather than as a colour step. Approve one polished panel and the lot follows it.

02. Does honed steel gray granite stain or etch in a kitchen?

It does not etch, because this is a granite and not a carbonate stone. It can take oil and wine if left standing, so the standard answer is a penetrating sealer on a honed face and a quick wipe. Polished faces resist more.

03. What drives the steel gray granite price on a countertop order?

Thickness, finish, edge profile and the number of cutouts, not the stone alone. A 20 mm eased top and a 30 mm laminated ogee top with two apertures are different products from the same block, so the price is quoted per template.

04. Which finish suits a steel grey antique granite countertop?
