Product Introduction
G664 Granite Cross Headstone

G664 Granite Cross Headstone is a one-piece memorial cut from G664 brown granite, a dense stone with low porosity that takes a crisp carved edge and holds it outdoors through frost, heat and rain. The cross is what governs the section: the arms project from a shaft a fraction of their span, so the neck carries the whole arm load through the narrowest part of the stone, and that junction is the one most often lost on an assembled memorial. We cut the cross head, shaft and plinth from the same block and keep the arm-to-shaft corners radiused rather than square, so a stress raiser never cracks a place to start. The design stays the customer's: send a photograph, a sketch, or a dimensioned drawing, and we return a free CAD drawing, covering the arm span and the curve of the trefoil, before anything is sawn.

As a China stone factory, we run sawing, profiling, sandblasting, hand carving, and dry assembly in one Xiamen workshop, and every G664 granite cross tombstone is factory customized - arm span, shaft width, plinth proportion, carving depth, and lettering layout all cut to the approved drawing.

Quality Control & Inspection Standards

A cross fails differently from a flat upright. The arms are carried on a shaft a fraction of their span, so the neck governs the section, and the two places a cross actually breaks are the arm-to-shaft junction and the plinth socket. Both are settled at the saw and the carving bench, not at final inspection.

01

One-piece cutting and junction radius

Cross head, shaft and plinth come off one block, and the internal corners where the arms meet the shaft are radiused rather than left square. A square internal corner is a stress raiser, and on a cantilevered arm it is where a crack starts.

02

Carving depth against remaining section

Relief carving removes material from the arm, which is the part carrying the load. Depth is capped against the arm thickness and checked on the drawing, so decorative work can never hollow the arm that holds it up.

03

Plinth proportion and fixing check

Shaft width, arm span and plinth mass are checked against each other before sawing, and the dowel and socket are verified on the dry assembly. On an exposed site, the base is cut oversize rather than trusting a standard proportion.

04

Inscription, dry assembly and crating

Lettering is checked against the inscription schedule for depth, glyph set and line count, then head, shaft and plinth are dry-assembled as one unit, foamed, crated in a fumigated wooden crate and photographed before loading.

Typical Project & Application Scenarios

01.

Romanian and Central European cemetery programmes

The cross-shaped G664 granite headstone is cut as a plinth, shaft, and cross set, with trefoil, wave, or plain Latin arm profiles taken from the cemetery's own drawing. Arm profile drives the machining route: straight arm ends, radiused trefoil lobes run on the profiling machine, or a wave double trefoil shaped first and hand-worked after. Where the cemetery issues a plot width, the plinth length is set to that width and the shaft width follows, so the set lands in the row as drawn. Cross, shaft, and plinth come off one block group and are crated as one set with the plot reference on the crate. The plinth underside is cut flat and true for bedding without packing, because frost heave lifts a poorly bedded plinth and opens the dowel joint.

02.

Private and family memorials

A single cross with the inscription set on the plinth face, where the flat area for names and dates runs wider than the shaft. A 200–300mm shaft carries little more than a name; the 600–900mm plinth face is the only area that takes a multi-line inscription, so the lettering schedule is set by the plinth. Because the shaft is dowelled into the plinth top directly above the lettering, the lines are laid out around the fixing, and line count is fixed before letter height. Where a second name follows, reserve those lines on the original drawing.

FAQ

Everything You Want To Know

Grey Granite Cross Headstone for European

01. The carved recess reads matt against the polished face - how is that kept consistent?

Carved relief is finished to a controlled depth and left honed rather than polished, so it reads as a deliberate shadow instead of a defect. Where lettering is filled white or gold, the infill is matched against the honed recess rather than against the polished face.

02. Will the carved detail on the cross still be crisp after decades of frost?

G664 has low porosity and resists frost, heat, and rain, so the surface does not spall and the carved lines do not crumble. What ages a carving is not the stone but a shallow cut, so relief depth is held against the arm thickness and the edges stay defined.

03. Our cemetery is on open ground - will a tall cross stay upright without support?

A cross carries less wind area than a solid slab, but through a much smaller section, so the plinth does the work. Plinth mass, socket depth, and dowel are set from the cross height at the drawing stage, and the base is cut oversize where the ground is exposed.

04. How are the arms packed so they survive sea freight without snapping?

The crate carries the arms rather than the neck, with the cross seated on its plinth and cushioning under each arm, so no load crosses the junction. Every set is numbered and photographed before loading, and transit claims are settled against that record.

05. Is the cross head cut from one piece of granite or assembled from two?

One piece, cut from a single block together with the shaft, so there is no joint at the neck, which is where an assembled cross eventually fails. The internal corners between arm and shaft are radiused rather than square, removing the stress raiser that starts a crack.
