Product Introduction
black slate paving

Irish green marble is a trade name rather than a place: in stone trade usage it covers dark green, pale-veined marbles, and the genuine article is Connemara marble from County Galway in western Ireland, a serpentine-bearing calcsilicate of the Dalradian sequence that was metamorphosed during the Ordovician, roughly 466 to 478 million years ago. The Irish green marble slab sold here is quarried in Fujian Province, China and shipped from our Xiamen works, which is what a buyer comparing it against Galway stock needs to know before ordering a container. Colour is a deep green ground carrying paler green and white veining, and the vein pattern runs in bands through the block, so slabs are cut and dry-laid in sequence to keep a wall or a counter run continuous.

Products Description

Parameter Specification
Product Name Black Slate Paving 900 x 600; also quoted as black slate paving slabs, black slate patio slabs or black slate garden tiles; brand YoYo Stone
Material and Origin Black slate, a foliated metamorphic rock split along its bedding planes; blocks taken first-hand from controlled slate quarries and processed at our two plants in Fujian and Hubei
Colour and Weathering Carbonaceous black to charcoal; the exposed face lightens towards grey as it oxidises, and a 900x600 slab lightens more visibly than a small tile
Standard Sizes 900x600, 600x600 and 600x300mm, or any size to your drawing; a 900x600 slab covers 0.54 m2
Thickness Bands 23 to 26mm, 18 to 21mm and 28 to 31mm, with 15mm on request
Calibration and Tolerance Face size within 2.0mm on calibrated stock; thickness inside 1.5mm of the stated band; uncalibrated split stock is quoted separately
Available Finishes Natural split, honed and polished; a polished face is not specified for external paving because it loses grip when wet
Edge and Arris Natural split edge, hand-dressed, sawn or tumbled on request; the arris is dressed because that is where flaking starts
Petrography A foliated metamorphic rock with a marked bedding cleavage, so the stone is split into flat plates rather than cut from a block
Density 2.70 to 2.85 g/cm3
Water Absorption 0.10 to 0.40% by mass
Compressive Strength 60 to 150 MPa, tested perpendicular to the cleavage
Flexural Strength 9 to 16 MPa, the governing value for a 900x600 slab on a bed
Hardness Mohs 3.0 to 4.0, so it wears and chips more readily than granite
Weight and Handling About 30 kg per 900x600x20mm slab and 45 kg at 30mm, so two people minimum on a frame
Bed and Joint A full mortar or sand-cement bed with no voids; 8 to 12mm joints on a pedestrian patio, with a wider joint or rigid edge restraint where vehicles cross
Fall and Drainage A minimum fall of 1:80 to a drain or edge; at 900x600 roughly two joints per m2 carry nothing, so the fall does the draining
Application Indoor and outdoor floors, garden paving, patios, paths, pool surrounds and landscaping
Packing Packed in banded, fumigated wooden crates or in carton boxes, with the faces protected
MOQ, Payment and Port Full containers filled to about 27 t for the European market, with smaller quantities accepted on enquiry; 30% by T/T with 70% against the B/L copy, or L/C; Xiamen, China

Quality Control & Inspection Standards

product-1-1
  • Colour band

Black slate is sorted to a tone band before splitting, because a container that mixes a jet piece with a charcoal one will show the difference across a patio once the surface begins to oxidise.

  • Calibration

On a 295mm tile a 3mm thickness variation is absorbed by the bedding sand; on a 900x600 slab it becomes a rocker, so the thickness band is gauged piece by piece and wedge-shaped splits are diverted to walling rather than to paving.

  • Cleavage integrity

The rock parts along planes that run the full length of the piece, so a slab with a visible open parting plane is pulled before it is packed, and any piece that has already lifted a flake at the edge is diverted.

  • Crate, jaw marks

Slabs are stacked face to face in fumigated crates or carton boxes and banded against movement, with the face protected from the crate jaw because a jaw mark on a split black face is not a mark that can be dressed out.

Products Application

Typical Project & Application Scenarios

Garden patios and terraces

Black slate paving 900 x 600 laid on a full bed at a 1:80 fall, with the joint set at 10mm and the slabs taken from one tone band so the patio reads as a single surface.

Garden paths and walkways

Black slate garden tiles at 600x300 or 600x600 for a narrower path, laid with the cleaved face up for grip and the arris dressed where the path meets a lawn edge.

Driveways and vehicle crossings

A thicker 28 to 31mm band on a rigid bed with a wider joint and an edge restraint, specified where a car crosses rather than a foot.

Pool surrounds and wet deck

Natural split black slate paving at 900x600, chosen for the cleaved face because a polished slate surround is a slip risk, with the fall running away from the pool edge.

FAQ

Everything You Want To Know

black slate garden tilesproduct-15-15

01.  Does black slate paving stay black after it is laid?

It stays dark but not uniform black. The colour is carbonaceous rather than dyed, so the exposed face moves towards charcoal grey as it oxidises. Ordered from one tone band, that shift reads as weathering; from mixed stock it reads as a two-tone patio.

02.  What thickness and bed does a 900x600 slate paving slab need?

18 to 21mm on a pedestrian patio and 28 to 31mm where a vehicle crosses, on a full mortar or sand-cement bed with no voids. At 0.54 m2 and about 30kg a slab rocks over a void and breaks there.

03.  Will black slate paving flake or spall in frost?

Only if water reaches an open cleavage plane. Slate parts along bedding planes, so we pull slabs with a visible parting plane, dress the arris rather than leaving a feathered edge, and recommend one impregnating sealer on exposed paving to slow water movement.

04.  Is natural split black slate paving slippery when wet?

No, the cleaved face is the reason it is specified. The split surface carries an irregular topography that breaks a water film, where a sawn or polished slate does not. We supply split as standard for pool surrounds and sloped paths.

05.  How is black slate paving packed, and what fits in a container?

Packed face to face into banded fumigated crates or carton boxes, labelled to the laying schedule. We fill to about 27 tons for European buyers, we mix thickness bands and sizes in one load, and we supply free samples on request.
