Product Introduction

Calacatta black quartz is a pattern name before it is a product: Carrara and Calacatta are Italian marble districts, and neither has ever produced a slab of engineered stone, so what the name buys here is a specification, a black ground with white veining, blown up to a 3200x1600mm jumbo. The slab is an engineered product, about 90 to 93% crushed crystalline quartz bound with 7 to 10% polyester resin, and the black ground is where the formulation earns its money, because a heavy pigment load has to be dispersed evenly or the face reads grey and cloudy under a shop light. The vein is the second decision: a unique calacatta black quartz can be veined through the body of the slab or printed onto the face, and the difference only appears when a fabricator cuts a sink aperture or polishes an exposed edge and finds the pattern stops.
Products Description
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Product Name | Calacatta Black Quartz, also sold as Black Carrara quartz; a black ground with white veining |
| Material and Pigment | Engineered stone: about 90 to 93% crushed crystalline quartz with 7 to 10% polyester resin, plus the pigment loading a black ground needs |
| Application | Kitchen countertops and islands, bathroom vanity tops, backsplash panels and wall cladding, retail and office joinery |
| Slab Sizes | 3200x1600mm and 3000x1400mm jumbo formats; other sizes factory customized to your cutting list |
| Thickness | 15, 18, 20 and 30mm, with 20 and 30mm covering countertop and island work |
| Pattern Type | Through-body veining or surface-printed veining, which behave differently where the edge is exposed; confirm which at enquiry |
| Surface Finishes | Polished as standard, honed where a matt black face is specified |
| Thickness Tolerance | Joint-free +/-1mm on a calibrated slab; +/-0.5mm where slabs are sold as book-matched pairs |
| Edge Profiles and Backsplash | Eased, beveled, bullnose, ogee, mitred and laminated edges; 100mm or 150mm splash, or a full-height panel cut from the same slab |
| Sink Cutout and Faucet Holes | Undermount or drop-in sink cutouts and predrilled faucet holes, cut on CNC from your template file |
| Density | 2.35–2.45 g/cm3, measured on the pressed slab rather than on the mix |
| Water Absorption | Below 0.05%, so a spill sits on the face instead of soaking into the slab |
| Compressive Strength | 190–220 MPa |
| Flexural Strength | 45–55 MPa |
| Mohs Hardness | 6 to 7 for the quartz fraction; the resin fraction is what marks, not the crystal |
| Heat Limit | About 120 to 150 °C at the surface; the polyester binder is the limit, so a hot pan needs a trivet |
| Slab Weight and Load Plan | About 246 kg a slab at 20mm, 368 kg at 30mm; a 20 ft carries roughly 100 slabs of 20mm, about 510 m2, in A-frames |
| Surface Protection and Packing | Peel-off film on the face, fumigated A-frame bundles; a black face shows handling marks that a white one hides |
| MOQ and Samples | One bundle, about 15 slabs of 3200x1600mm; no stock is held on this colour, and samples are cut from the actual lot |
| Payment, Terms and Port | 30% T/T deposit with balance against copy of B/L, or L/C at sight; EXW, FOB or CIF; loading port Xiamen, China |
Quality Standards
The way a black slab fails is optical, so this calacatta black quartz programme is inspected the way the client will first see it, under light. A cloudy patch where the pigment did not disperse, a haze left by the polisher, a handled mark under the film and a vein that finishes where the sink is going all disappear on a pale surface and all read at arm's length on a dark ground. The four checks below therefore run in pairs, what the light shows on the face and what the record shows once the slab is framed.

01
Pigment dispersion on the black ground
A black surface is judged under light, so every batch is checked against the retained reference slab, dry and under raking light, for the cloudy patches and grey blotching that an uneven pigment load leaves behind.
02
Vein continuity against the cut list
The vein is inspected where it will be cut, not only where the slab looks best, because a surface-printed pattern that runs into a sink aperture or an exposed edge stops mid-line.
03
Calibration and edge colour
Slabs are calibrated to +/-1mm, and an offcut from the batch is polished on the edge to confirm the edge reads the same depth of black as the face.
04
Dark-surface inspection, weight and emission documents
Slabs are inspected under raking light for scratching, polish haze and film residue, which show on a dark face and disappear on a light one, then filmed and crated in fumigated A-frames with the weight recorded for the load plan.
Products Application
Typical Project & Application Scenarios
Kitchen islands and perimeter runs
20mm and 30mm tops in calacatta black quartz, cut to a template with an eased or mitred edge, for a scheme where the cabinets are light and the worktop carries the contrast.
Bathroom vanity tops and wet walls
Vanity tops with undermount basins and drilled faucet holes, plus a matching splash or a full-height panel, from one lot so the vein pattern carries up the wall rather than restarting at the junction.

Book-matched feature walls and splashbacks
A pair of slabs dry-laid and mirrored across the joint for a lobby, lift interior or hospitality splashback, priced as a pair because the two faces are cut from one sequence.
Retail and office joinery
Reception counters, boardroom tables and display plinths in 30mm, mitred to a 60mm profile, where the black ground reads as a furniture surface rather than as a worktop.
FAQ
Everything You Want To Know

01. Is calacatta black quartz a natural stone, or the same material as Carrara marble?
02. Is the veining repeatable across a full order of unique calacatta black quartz?
03. What heat will a black quartz countertop take?
04. What should a fabricator allow for cutting loss on a jumbo slab order?
05. Will the seams show on a black veined quartz worktop?
They will if the adhesive is not matched. A black ground hides a joint only when the seam is set in a black colour-matched epoxy and the slabs come from one batch. Ask us for the edge offcut with each bundle before your shop cuts.
