Product Introduction

Crystal Wood Marble is a Chinese marble with a straight, linear grain, and the order is settled before the saw runs, because the direction of that grain on the face is decided by which way the block is cut rather than by anything done afterwards. Blocks are bought one at a time and held for a run, in a silver grey to white ground that carries darker bluish veins under polish.
The works runs six gang saws and fifteen polishing lines, and the slabs of a run are set out together and read as one field before packing, so the grain carries from one slab to the next instead of stopping at every joint. What leaves in the bundle is a run rather than a pile of slabs: the grain direction, the match position of each slab and the calibrated thickness are all written onto the packing list.

Quality Standards
A wood grain slab cannot be accepted a slab at a time, because what the buyer is actually buying is the continuity of one line from one piece to the next across a wall or a floor.
A single slab can be flawless and the batch still be wrong: the grain can be the right grain and face the wrong way, and the mirror image that a feature wall is built on can be missing by one slab. The inspection therefore runs on the batch, with the slabs stood up together and read as the field they will become.

01
Vein Direction Marked On The Face
The grain direction is chalked on the face of every slab before it is banded, since a slab set the other way round on site stops the lines dead and reads as a different marble at that joint.
02
Run Read As One Field
The slabs of a run are stood up and read together before packing, because a batch of individually good slabs can still fail where the line jumps at each successive joint.
03
Back Read For Iron And Open Fissures
The back of every slab is read for rust veins and open fissures before the face is polished, since a fissure on the back of a layered marble opens through the polish within a season.
04
Polish Read Before Waxing
Gloss is read before any wax goes near the face, because wax fills the fine roughness and covers a slab that was not taken far enough on the polishing line.
Products Application
Typical Project & Application Scenarios
Which Way The Block Is Cut
The grain on a wood grain slab is not a pattern printed on the surface; it is a plane inside the block, and the slab is a slice through it.
Book-Matched Pairs On Feature Walls
A reception desk or a feature wall in wood grain stone is usually built as a mirrored pair, with the veins of one slab reflecting the other across the joint, and the mirror only exists if the two slabs came off adjacent positions in the same block.

Wet Areas, Vanities And Food-Facing Tops
vanity top, a bath surround or a kitchen surface in marble is a calcium carbonate surface in the one place where acids land, so the failure is chemical rather than mechanical: it arrives as dull etched patches under a soap dish or a wine glass and as a stain that follows the water in.
Large Thin Slabs Fixed To A Wall
An 18 mm slab at 2400x1400 mm is about 163 kg of brittle material, and it is fixed as a cladding panel rather than laid as a floor tile.
FAQ
Everything You Want To Know

01. What does crystal wood mean in this stone?
It is a trade name for a wood grain marble, and the same stone travels as Crystal Wood Grain, Crystal White Wood, Crystal Wood Vein and Striato Bianco. What the name describes is a straight linear figure rather than a colour, so the grain direction matters more than the label.
02. Which way should the grain run on a floor or a wall?
Along the long dimension of the space, and the same way on every slab. A run laid with one slab turned across the others stops the line at that joint, and the eye reads it as two different stones meeting rather than as natural variation.
03. Can you book-match a pair for a feature wall?
04. Can this marble be used in a bathroom or on a vanity top?
05. Can it be used outside?
Not for exterior paving or for a wet area, and the reason is the material rather than the finish: this is a calcium carbonate marble, so acid rain and repeated wetting attack the surface itself. For exterior work in the same look we would quote a granite instead.
