Product Introduction

Cobble stone at YoYo Stone covers two products sold under one name: sawn granite setts cut to a fixed size for driveways and vehicle aprons, and hand-split or tumbled cobbles for garden paths, edging and decorative borders. The range is cut from G603 grey granite, G654 dark grey granite and Zhangpu Black, with black limestone and basalt for foot traffic where the darker tone matters. Small pieces bought by the pallet are decided by two things, the size band and the colour band, so both are fixed per quarry face and numbered per pallet before loading. As a china stone factory we cut 8x8x8, 10x10x5, 10x10x10, 20x10x10 and 20x10x5cm setts, factory customized, with meshed panels for tight schedules.

Quality Control & Inspection Standards

The failures that come back on cobbles are never visible in the sample bag: a size band that drifts 4mm across a pallet so the joints wander, a colour step between two pallets of the same name, and broken arrises from tumbling or hand splitting. All three are settled on the saw bench and again on the pallet, before the crates are closed.

Block selection and colour banding

Blocks are chosen per quarry face for one order and rejected if they carry iron pockets or micro-fissures, because a pocket becomes a rust bleed on a sett and a fissure becomes a broken corner under a tamper. Pallets are numbered and kept to one block group.

Size band and tolerance control

Sawn faces are held to +/-1mm and the nominal size band is set at the saw rather than at packing; hand-split and tumbled faces are graded by trammel into a stated band so a laying gang is not sorting pieces on site.

Face finish and edge condition

Flamed and bush-hammered faces are checked for slip resistance and even texture, natural split faces for a clean bed line, and every pallet is inspected for chipped arrises because a chipped edge is what shows first in a decorative border.

Packing, weights and loading

Setts ship in fumigated wooden crates or 1 tonne bulk bags to suit the site, each marked with its weight and shade; the container is weight-planned to the 27 ton payload limit of a 20ft, and SGS, CE and Form A certificates go with the documents.

Everything You Want To Know

01. How do you stop the size and colour shifting between pallets?

Both are fixed before cutting. One order comes from one quarry face and one block group, pallets are numbered and kept to that band, and sawn faces are held to +/-1mm. Every pallet is marked with its shade and weight before loading.

02. Is black limestone or granite better for a driveway?

Granite, without question, for vehicles. Black limestone is calcium-based and fades toward grey under UV and slightly acidic rainfall within months, which is normal behaviour rather than a fault. Specify limestone for foot traffic and borders, granite for anything a vehicle drives on.

03. How are cobbles packed, and how much fits in a 20ft container?

Setts ship in fumigated wooden crates or 1 tonne bulk bags, weight and shade marked. At 2.70 g/cm3 a 5cm sett runs about 135 kg per m2, so a 20ft container at its 27 ton payload carries roughly 200 m2.

04. How many cobbles do I need per square metre, and what loss should I budget?

At 10x10cm it is 100 pieces per m2, at 20x10cm it is 50, and at 8x8x8cm about 156. Budget 3-5% for breakage and edge cutting on a driveway, and more where a border has to be cut around curves, then order by square metre rather than by piece.

05. Can you supply reclaimed or used cobblestones instead of new stone?

We supply new stone only. If you want the worn look of reclaimed setts, we cut a tumbled or antique face to a stated size band, which avoids the mixed sizes, mortar residue and hidden cracks that arrive with used cobblestones.
