Products Introduction

indoor window sill

A Grey Granite Windowsill is a drainage detail before it is a decorative trim, and three features decide whether it works: an outward fall on the top face, a drip groove in the underside of the projecting portion, and enough projection to throw water clear of the masonry. Get those wrong and the detail fails, not the stone: a flat-topped sill pools water, which then tracks back and stains the render. Grey Granite Windowsill stock is cut from granite grey slabs in 20mm, 30mm and 40mm to the reveal width and projection on your drawing at +/-1mm, or +/-0.5mm on calibrated stock; the drip groove is standard rather than an extra, 8 to 12mm wide and 6 to 10mm deep through the underside of the overhang, set back 10 to 15mm from the front nosing, because too far forward leaves the toe thin and too far back lets water reach the wall. The projection is set 40mm or more clear of the wall face, and long openings are planned as two or three pieces with the joints on the setting-out drawing.

Products Description

Parameter Specification
Product Name Grey Granite Windowsill, grey granite window sill, granite window sill
Brand YoYo Stone
Also Listed As Grey granite windowsill, granite window sill, indoor window sill, grey granite window sill, windowsill, exterior window cill
Colour Light grey as the standard field, with flecks of darker grey and black minerals. Grey is quoted by variation rather than by name
Origin China. Block bought first-hand from the quarry operators, alongside our own granite quarry interests at G603 and new G654
Material Granite, an intrusive igneous rock. Not a volcanic stone, which is the extrusive family that includes basalt, and not a marble or a quartzite
Material Options G603 and G603 New light grey, G654 dark grey, G633, G614 and G664 across the mid grey and brown-grey range, Shanxi Black, Blue Pearl and Impala for contrast work
G603 and G603 New Original G603 and G603 New are different stones from different sources that read similarly in a sample. They are never mixed on one elevation, and the material is nominated on the order before cutting
Finished / Process Polished, Honed, Flammed, Brushed, Bushhammered, Leather, etc. Also sawn, flamed plus brushed, antique, pineapple, chiseled, sandblasted and water jet on request
Standard Thickness 20mm, 30mm and 40mm for sills and window boards; 50mm on request where a deep reveal or a heavy projection requires it
Thickness Tolerance +/-1mm as the house standard, or +/-0.5mm on calibrated stock where sills are set end to end in a continuous run
Sizes Any size as requested, cut to the reveal width, projection and length on your drawing or cutting list; the size reference on the material pages runs from big slab 2600-2800up x 1400/1600up mm through cut-to-size 30x30cm, 60x30cm and 60x60cm to tiles at 305x305x10mm, 400x400x10mm and 610x305x10mm
Drip Groove Cut into the underside of the projecting portion as standard, 8 to 12mm wide and 6 to 10mm deep, set back about 10 to 15mm from the front nosing. A groove cut closer to the toe leaves it thin, and one set further back lets water track to the wall and stain it
Fall and Projection The top face is cut with an outward fall and the sill projects 40mm or more clear of the wall face below, which is what lets the drip fall free of the render instead of running down it
Edge and Ends Chamfer, eased, half bullnose, full bullnose, pencil round, ogee and mitred returns; stooled or upturned ends are cut where water could otherwise track sideways at a reveal
Joints and Returns Long openings are planned as two or three pieces with the joint positions on the setting-out drawing and the cut edges matched from one block lot, so the joint reads as a joint and not as a colour change
Bedding and Fixing Bedded on mortar or on a flexible silicone sealant, never rigidly bonded to a timber frame, because timber moves seasonally and a rigid bond cracks the stone. The joint between the sill and the frame, and between the sill and the wall, is sealed
Sealing A penetrating sealer on sill, ends and underside at fabrication, and re-applied on the same cycle as the rest of the facade. Sealing limits water uptake and staining; it does not make the stone waterproof, and it does not replace the drip groove
Water Absorption 0.40 percent maximum by ASTM C615 for granite dimension stone; lot testing per order is advised
Density Not less than 2,560 kg/m3 by ASTM C615, and about 2,700 kg/m3 in practice, so about 54kg per square metre at 20mm and 81kg at 30mm
Compressive Strength Minimum 131 MPa by ASTM C615, tested to ASTM C170
Modulus of Rupture Minimum 10.34 MPa by ASTM C615, tested to ASTM C99; minimum flexural strength 8.27 MPa
Abrasion Resistance Minimum 25 H by ASTM C615, tested to ASTM C241
Hardness Mohs 6 to 7, so a steel blade will not scratch it and the nosing holds its profile under foot traffic
Weather Resistance Granite is frost-resistant and does not deteriorate under freeze-thaw cycles in the way a carbonate stone does; frost resistance is verified to EN 12371 where a project specifies it, and a sill's service life still depends on the fall and the drip groove being cut correctly
Application House windowsill and window boards, exterior window cills, door sills and thresholds, coping and capping, stair treads, skirting and commercial building facades. Home, hotel, villa and other decoration
MOQ Usually sold in full containers that can be filled up to about 27 tonnes for the European market; a smaller quantity is acceptable on request
Packing Strong seaworthy wooden crates, fumigated to ISPM-15, sills crated on edge rather than laid flat with foam between pieces and arris protection on the nosing, then palletised
Loading A weight cargo: about 500 square metres of 20mm and about 333 square metres of 30mm to a 20ft at 26 to 27 tonnes. A 1200x200x30mm sill is about 19kg, so roughly 1,380 pieces to the container
Quality Control Three tiers: an experienced QC team detects block quality first, production managers follow production quality, and QC checks the finished products' quality piece by piece carefully. Photographs of the finished and loaded order are provided
Samples Free of charge; the buyer pays the courier and the cost is refunded against the order

Quality Standards

Quality Control & Inspection Standards

Fall and projection checked against the drawing

The outward fall on the top face and the projection clear of the wall face are measured before dispatch, since a sill cut without fall cannot be corrected on site and pools water against the reveal.

Drip groove section and position gauged

The groove is checked for the 8 to 12mm width and 6 to 10mm depth and for its set-back from the front nosing, because a groove run too close to the nose leaves the toe thin and one run too far back lets water track to the wall.

Thickness calibration and nosing condition

Sills are measured to +/-1mm, or +/-0.5mm on calibrated stock for a continuous run, and the nosing is inspected for chipping, since a chipped toe cannot be dressed once the sill is bedded.

Practical Applications

Residential window sills and window boards

A Grey Granite Windowsill board at 20mm or 30mm, cut to the reveal, usually with an eased front edge and a drip groove on the exterior run, giving a surface that takes plant pots, condensation and cleaning without staining the way a limestone or a marble board does.

Exterior window cills across a facade

The detail that carries the weather: outward fall, drip groove and at least 40mm of projection clear of the wall face, in G603 or G654, with the same material nominated for every sill on the elevation so the run reads as one field.

stone window sills
types of window sills

Commercial building facades

Sills, copings and banding cut to the same block lot at 30mm or 40mm, where the specification is driven by the drip detail and the frost performance to EN 12371 rather than by appearance.

FAQ

Q: How deep should a drip groove be on a grey granite windowsill?

A:Cut it 8 to 12mm wide and 6 to 10mm deep through the underside of the projecting portion, set back about 10 to 15mm from the front nosing. Too close to the nose leaves the toe thin; too far back and water reaches the wall.

Q: Does a grey granite windowsill need a slope?

A: Yes, and it is cut, not built in on site. An outward fall on the top face sheds water off the projection, and a sill left flat pools water against the reveal. The projection should be 40mm or more clear of the wall face.

Q: Why specify granite rather than a volcanic stone for exterior sills?

A: Granite is intrusive, not volcanic. It cooled slowly at depth, so its crystals interlock and it reaches Mohs 6 to 7 with 0.40 percent maximum absorption under ASTM C615. Volcanic stones cool fast and weather faster, because their fine crystals and glass offer less resistance to frost and salt.
