Product Introduction
product-1-1

Green porphyry is a fine-grained volcanic rock carrying visible crystals, quarried in China, and it is the exact wording of that description that an order turns on. The texture in the name belongs to a cooling history rather than to a country: a porphyry is a rock whose magma set with large crystals standing in a fine groundmass, which is why the same word is attached to the Trentino material that European buyers mean by porfido and to stone cut in China that carries none of that origin.

On this page the origin is stated as China and nothing else is implied, and green is the colour the range is quoted in alongside red, grey and purple. The trade also sells this family under green granite names, so the practical rule is that the sample and the rock type are accepted together and the name on the invoice is not evidence of either.

Quality Standards

Quality Control & Inspection Standards

Large paving is not accepted piece by piece, because nothing measured on a single 600 mm paver tells you whether the field will look right once it is down. The object of inspection here is the reading taken between two pieces: the step under a straightedge laid across a joint, the crossfall taken on a laid field, the coverage under the middle of a face that only bears at its corners, and the green judged twice on the finish that will leave the yard, once dry and once wetted.

Each of those belongs to the assembly or to the surface rather than to the piece, and gauging a paver on its own in the factory cannot recover any of it.

01

Straightedge Across The Joint

A straightedge is laid across two pavers set at the drawn joint width and the step between them read, because the defect a client sees on a finished field is the lip at a joint rather than anything visible in either piece by itself.

02

Green Read On The Shipped Face

Colour is judged twice on every finish we intend to send, once dry and once wetted, because a flamed delivery greys away from a honed sample and the wet reading is what the client lives with for most of the year.

03

Fall Taken On The Laid Field

Crossfall is measured on the laid field with a level instead of being accepted from the drawing, because a large field that loses its fall in one corner does not shed water and the puddle is read as a fault in the stone.

04

Bed Coverage Read By Lifting

A laid paver is lifted before grouting and the coverage under the middle of its face inspected, since a large thin piece bears on its high points and any void beneath it is where the crack begins.

Products Application

Typical Project & Application Scenarios

Bound-Bed Forecourts Under Vehicle Load

Where a green porphyry field is driven on, the paving stops being a finish and becomes part of the pavement, and the thickness then runs the bed.

Pedestal-Supported Podium Decks and Terraces

A podium deck or a roof terrace changes the question entirely, because the paving is no longer bedded at all: each piece sits on adjustable pedestals at its corners and the span between those supports becomes the governing number.

Steps, Ramps and Level Changes

Level changes are where a paving scheme is most often rejected, because a step is read at eye height from a metre away and scale cannot disguise it.

Treads are cut at 40 mm with a dressed front edge, and the riser is supplied as a separate piece so a worn or spalled nosing can be replaced without lifting the field behind it.

Open-Jointed Drainage Banding and Tree Pits

Porphyry is often specified where water has to go into the ground rather than run off it, and in that work the detailing is all in the joint.

FAQ

Everything You Want To Know

product-1-1

01.  Is green porphyry a granite, and which country does it come from?

Porphyry describes how a rock crystallised rather than what family it belongs to: magma that set slowly enough to grow large crystals inside a fine matrix. This material comes from China and also travels under green granite names, so approve it on the rock type and the sample together.

02.  Why does the delivered green look different from the sample?

Two reasons, both predictable. The green is strongest on a honed or sawn face and greys on a flamed one, and it darkens sharply while wet. A sample approved dry in a honed finish does not describe a flamed field in a wet month, so both readings belong in the file.

03.  What thickness should green porphyry paving be?

Twenty millimetres only over a full bound bed, because a thin piece cannot bridge a void. From 30 mm a sand bed works for foot traffic, and the 40 to 50 mm range covers vehicle load, pedestal-supported decks and steps.

04.  How much does a 600x600 paver weigh, and how much fits a 20ft?

A 600x600x30 mm paver works out at roughly 28 kg at about 2.6 g/cm³, and a square metre of 20 mm paving comes to about 52 kg. A 27 tonne payload therefore takes around 500 m² in 20 mm and nearer 350 m² in 30 mm.

05.  Does green porphyry paving need sealing, and will it stain?

Being a silicate, it does not react with acid rain, wine or citrus the way a limestone does; what happens over years is abrasion, which dulls the surface rather than eating into it. Absorption between 0.2 and 0.8 percent makes a penetrating sealer optional, though it is worth specifying wherever oil or de-icing salt will sit.
