Product Introduction

Modifying granite countertops is a matching job before it is a cutting job, because the piece that makes a modification difficult is almost never the size but the fact that the top it joins is already installed and already aged. A granite top can be re-cut in several ways: a section taken out for a new range or hob, a sink or faucet aperture enlarged, a run shortened or extended onto a jointed piece, a damaged area cut out and replaced, or an edge re-profiled and re-laminated where a laminate return has failed. What it cannot do is worth stating before the order rather than after: a granite countertop cannot be widened invisibly, since the seam will read on a polished face, and a polished surface that has been down for six years cannot be matched gloss for gloss in place, because the installed stone has dulled and a new piece at 95 gloss units will read brighter beside it. The way round that is to match the lot and re-polish the whole top, or to specify a honed or leathered finish for the added section so the step is deliberate rather than accidental, and we say which of the two applies once we have seen the stone in daylight.
Products Description
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Product Name | Modifying Granite Countertops; also quoted as granite tops for sale; brand YoYo Stone |
| Materials | Rose White, Tiger White, G603, Galaxy Black, Carrara White and Black and White granite, with other grades on request |
| What Can Be Modified | A section removed for a new range or hob, an enlarged sink or faucet aperture, a run extended onto a jointed piece, a replaced damaged area, or a re-laminated edge |
| What Cannot Be Modified | A top cannot be widened invisibly; a polished face cannot be matched gloss for gloss in place; a new aperture needs radiused corners and support behind it |
| Matching | Cut from the same lot and grade where the block is still available; where it is not, the whole top is re-polished so the addition is not part-matched |
| Thickness | 20mm and 30mm; a 40mm face is built as a 20+20mm lamination rather than cut from a solid 40mm slab |
| Edge Profiles | Full bullnose as standard, plus eased, beveled, ogee, mitred and a rebuilt laminated return |
| Surface Finishes | Polished as standard, with honed and leathered specified for a section that has to sit beside an aged top |
| Sink and Faucet Apertures | Undermount or drop-in, CNC cut to your template, internal corners radiused, with a support batten or a fitted sink rail under an enlarged opening |
| Seam and Adhesive | The seam is set on a grain change and bonded with a colour-matched epoxy, since a cream adhesive on a dark granite reads as a line |
| Templating | The installed top is templated by the local fitter and the drawing sent to us; a modification is quoted from that template, not from a catalogue size |
| Tolerance | Length, width and thickness held to +/-1mm; aperture position to +/-1mm; the edge profile worked to your detail |
| Density | 2.62 to 2.75 g/cm3 |
| Absorption and Strength | 0.15 to 0.30% by mass; 130 to 200 MPa compressive and 10 to 18 MPa flexural, on a dry specimen |
| Hardness | Mohs 6 to 7; a granite face resists a kitchen knife, and a chipped arris is the fault to expect rather than a scratch |
| Weight | A 2400x600x20mm piece is about 78 kg and the same size at 30mm about 117 kg, so a modified section is a two-person lift on a frame |
| Main Markets | UK, USA, Russia and Australia |
| Packing | Foam between pieces inside a fumigated wooden crate to ISPM 15, with edges and profiled ends protected and each piece marked for the room it fits |
| Delivery, Payment and Port | Two weeks as standard and about three weeks for a mixed container; 30% deposit with 70% by T/T after shipping; FOB Xiamen port, China |
| MOQ and Samples | A full container is the usual order, with mixed colours and mixed sizes accepted; free samples in your own size, with the express cost refunded after the first order |
Quality Standards
Modifying granite countertops is judged against a top that is already in somebody's kitchen, so none of the four checks below is made on the new piece alone. Two of them are about matching, the lot the stone came from and the way an aged polish reads beside a fresh one, and two are about the joints a modification creates, the seam that has to be invisible and the aperture that has to be carried. What makes this trade different from new work is that the reference standard is not our own sample board, it is a countertop we have never seen in a room we will never visit.

01
Lot match and gloss match
The added piece is cut from the same lot and grade as the installed top wherever the block is still held, because two lots of Rose White or Galaxy Black are not the same stone.
02
The seam line and the adhesive
A seam is set on a grain change rather than wherever the length happens to fall, and it is bonded with a colour-matched epoxy, because a cream or grey adhesive on a black or a dark brown granite draws the line the client was promised they would not see.
03
The aperture and the support behind it
Enlarging a sink or hob aperture is the part of a modification that fails later rather than on the day, so the corners are radiused instead of squared, the cut is made to the template rather than to the new appliance, and a batten or a fitted sink rail is set under the opening to carry it.
04
The template, the marking and the crate
A modification is quoted and cut from the fitter's template, with the room and the position written on the piece rather than left to be identified on site, since two similar lengths in one crate are how the wrong piece ends up fitted and cut twice.
Products Application
Typical Project & Application Scenarios
Kitchen refurbishment with a new range or hob
A section of an existing run cut out and replaced, templated to the new appliance and edge-matched to the top it joins.
Enlarging a sink or faucet aperture
An opening widened for a larger basin or a different tap set, with radiused corners and a support batten under the cut, done on the installed stone where it is safe and on a replacement piece where it is not.

Extending a run or closing a gap
An added length on a jointed piece where a kitchen has grown into a neighbouring space, with the seam set on a grain change and the adhesive colour-matched.
Replacing a damaged area
A stained, chipped or cracked section cut back to sound stone and replaced, which usually costs less than a whole new top and is the reason a matching lot matters more than a fresh slab.
FAQ
Everything You Want To Know

01. Can an existing granite countertop be widened or lengthened?
02. How do you match a new piece to a granite top that has been down for years?
03. Should I buy a granite vanity top direct from a factory or from a local supplier?
04. What is the minimum order for modifying granite countertops work?
05. How is a single modified piece packed so the edge arrives intact?
Foam between the pieces inside a fumigated wooden crate to ISPM 15, with profiled ends and arrises protected and each piece marked for the room it fits. Edge damage in transit is almost always a packing fault rather than a handling one.
